A Decade of Browns Sawdust Charity Golf Days

Way back in 2009 I approached a good mate, Dick Cutherson from A Positive Move about running a charity golf day for cancer research.

I asked Dickie, “do you know any good charities that we could help with raising some funds, Dickie said leave it with me and I will come back to you.

A few weeks had past and Dickie approached me and said one of my best friends is in football and he would love to have a chat with you, so a week later I caught up with Teddy Whitten from the EJ Whitten Foundation for a chat and that day we started planning our 1st charity golf day together.

I said to Teddy, I would like my golf days to be different to most and I would like to have a theme each year and put fun back into the game of golf, he said what a great idea so we come up with theme for 2009 and it was a Circus theme to make it fun.

So, we were off and running we start approaching sponsors for a donation as well some companies to support the 2009 charity golf day with a team of players, and most importantly looking for a major sponsor to kick start the event, thanks to Hallam Truck Centre they got on board no questions asked as the major sponsor for the full 10 years.

Our 1st year of 2009, we hit a great result off 67 players and raised a whopping $22,000 for the EJ Whitten Foundation and from that point the years got bigger and bigger each year, more players and more sponsors, the 10th year we hit the golf course with 210 players making it one of the biggest charity golf day the Sandhurst golf club had ever seen.

Since 2009 Brown Sawdust & Shavings has run a decade of charity golf day for charities like Make a Wish, Glen McGrath as well as the E J Whitten foundation’s raising just over half a million dollars, it was a great result by everyone involved and all the support from all the 50 companies along the way.

In 2020, Unfortunately Covid-19 put an end to what was a great decade of Ambrose charity golf days, it was just too hard to rebound from covid as some companies had merged or retired or had not bounced back from Covid lockdowns across Australia.
